South West Vascular Surgeons, February 1990 Meeting

This study reviewed 113 elderly patients after embolectomy over a 10 year period, (median age 77, M:F 46:67). The 30 day mortality was 43%. This was associated with, age >80yrs., failed embolectomy, and aorto-iliac occlusions (P<0.05). Median long term survival was 29 months, (range 1-126), with most deaths in the first year, and a good survival after this. The most common subsequent vascular event in these patients was stroke (10) with very few further limb emboli (3). There was no difference in late mortality and vascular events between 28 patients on long term warfarin and 26 patients not anticoagulated.
